I wanted to add some small splitting wedges to my personal carving kit recently so I took an old railroad spring clip and set out forging to what I wanted. The goal was to have something small enough to kit carry, wouldn't add much weight, but still be effective so I didn't have to use my axe for splitting small rounds.
These little wedges fit the bill perfectly. They are 5/8ths of an inch thick. (19mm) 1.25 inches wide (32mm) and roughly 4 to 4.5inches long (100-115mm)
This batch of wedges were all forged from upcycled spring clips which are incredibly durable steel. Perfect for these wedges. They should last a lifetime!
I recommend using a wood mallet to drive wedges so as to not deform the steel.
